It is no surprise that Russia has branded their small arms industry under the name Kalashnikov. This week they honored the great engineer that developed one of the most recognized firearms around the globe to commemorate the 95th anniversary of the designer Mikhail Kalashnikov. They have mounted a plaque in Izhevsk at the Concern Kalashnikov factory formally known as Izhmash, along with a bust of the gunsmith who passed away one year ago.
The company started over two centuries ago, but clearly one man brought the Russian firearms industry to a whole new level providing venerated weaponry that certainly deserves recognition within his own country. Perhaps we can learn something from the respect given to a man that helped developed a better defense for his nation along with a firearms industry that has exported millions of firearms. Obviously, you can have your own opinion on one man's impact on the world, but it does put an interesting perspective on how our own countrymen view comparable designers within our own nation.
