The UFC’s annual “Fight for the Troops” event this year will be on Nov. 6 at Ft. Campbell, KY. While this is not the first Fight for the Troops event (the one in 2008 raised $4 million dollars for the Intrepid Fallen Heroes Fund, for instance) it is the first time an actual Soldier will be fighting in the main event.
Sgt. First Class Tim Kennedy is a Green Beret currently serving in the Texas Army National Guard. Staff Sgt. Colton Smith is an Army Combatives instructor with III Corps at the “Fight House” (Ft. Hood Army Combatives Facility) at Ft. Hood TX. Both will be fighting that night—and both, we are extremely proud to say, are sponsored by Vertx.
Kennedy is a grappler who is Special Forces, Ranger and Sniper qualified and served with 7th SFG with deployments to both Iraq and Afghanistan. Kennedy is known for having an iron chin; he has never been knocked out and recently defeated Roger Gracie by decision. Irreverent, self-deprecating, a man of faith and not coincidentally fearless, Kennedy was recently “stood up” by his scheduled opponent Lyoto Machida. After an interesting Twitter campaign, Raphael Natal was announced as Kennedy’s new opponent.
Smith is an Airborne, Sapper and Ranger Qualified Infantryman in the US Army who enlisted at the age of 18 and served 2 tours in Iraq as an infantryman. He was the first active duty Soldier to appear on The Ultimate Fighter reality show, where he won Season 16. Colton’s passion as an NCO is teaching soldiers the skills they need to survive overseas and mentoring men and women interested in the military. Colton is also a man of faith, who is confident his aspiration to be a UFC champion is, as he describes it, a "God-birthed dream".
Vertx signed the final contract with Colton just this month; they’ve actually been working with Kennedy since last May.
“It is a singularly distinct honor for Vertx to be sponsoring men of this caliber,” says Vertx Brand Manager, Ginger Rohlfs. “They aren’t just great fighters – they’re combat veterans and patriots of outstanding personal character. Vertx is proud to be associated with both Tim and Colton. We fully support their efforts inside and outside the ring.”
You will be able to watch the fight on FOX Sports 1. You can keep an eye on the Rhino Den and of course Vertx.com for further developments.
