Congressman Filemon Vela Texas 34th Congressional District Responds

Hopefully by now those Representatives and Senators who have been contacted by supporters of the 2nd Amendment and the Constitution in general are feeling the heat and realizing that any new legislation on their so called gun control is not the way to go. Nonetheless vigilance and a constant push against such laws should stay on track. Our latest response is from Congressman Filemon Vela out of Texas' 34th Congressional District.

Thank you for taking the time to let me know of your opposition to gun control. I appreciate knowing your concerns, and I am pleased to have this opportunity to respond.

As you may know, President Obama established a task force to study the attack at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut.  The group, headed by Vice President Joe Biden, brought together a diverse group of Americans representing many different viewpoints.  At the recommendation of the task force, President Obama announced changes to current policies to address access to treatment for mental illness, safety in schools and other public places, and information sharing between law enforcement agencies.  The President also announced his intention to ask Congress to consider legislation to expand the current requirement for background checks for the purchase or transfer of firearms along with a ban on assault weapons and high-capacity magazines.

It is not clear when, or if, the House of Representatives will take up the gun control legislation proposed by the President, but I will certainly keep your concerns in mind if this matter is debated by Congress.  Like you, I believe that the Second Amendment to the Constitution clearly states the intent of our founders that law-abiding citizens have the right to possess firearms, but I also believe that some restrictions such as prohibiting violent criminals from possessing firearms are reasonable and necessary.

As your elected Representative in Congress, I look forward to hearing from you again in the future regarding this or any other matter of mutual concern.  I also encourage you to visit my website at Vela.House.Gov where you can read more about current legislative issues and sign up for my newsletter.
