It appears that the Representatives and Senators from Washington State are very response. Our latest message is from Rep. Doc Hastings out of the 4th Congressional District. We still have a long way to go and a short time to get there, so keep on sending in your responses.
Thank you for contacting me regarding your support for Second Amendment rights. I appreciate you making me aware of your views on this issue.
Let me begin by saying that my thoughts and prayers are with the victims and families affected by the tragic shooting at the Sandy Hook Elementary School. In the wake of tragic acts of gun violence such as this, there have been attempts in Congress to enact additional gun laws. However, I cannot in good conscience vote to impose unnecessary restrictions on law-abiding citizens who legally own guns or who want to obtain them through legal means. There are more than 20,000 federal, state and local firearms laws in place to prevent criminals from obtaining firearms, and our focus should be on diminishing gun-related crime through strict enforcement of existing gun laws – rather than on imposing further restrictions on law-abiding citizens.
I am committed to protecting the freedoms and rights that were guaranteed by the United States Constitution. We are guaranteed all of the rights set forth in the Constitution. None is any less precious than another. Please rest assured that I will continue to support measures to ensure the rigorous enforcement of our existing guns laws, and oppose misguided efforts to undermine our Constitutional rights.
Again, thank you for contacting me. Please do not hesitate to do so in the future on any matter of importance to you.
