Our latest respose is from Ted Deutch out of Florida. His message is fairly straightforward and definitely needs to be contacted by some of his constituents to be better informed on the necessity of the 2nd Amendment to remain as our protection to bear arms.
Thank you for contacting me to share your thoughts on gun control legislation. Our Constitution protects the right of citizens to keep and bear arms. While I recognize that the individual right to bear arms is an important part of the American tradition, I believe it is essential that we develop reasonable laws designed to ensure that this right is exercised safely and responsibly.
The terrible consequences of gun violence are clear. While I understand that we will never be able to prevent every instance of gun violence, I believe that through reasonable regulation we can reduce the available supply of magazines, and ultimately save lives. I support an assault weapons ban and legislation that would close the gun show loophole, so that guns don't fall into the wrong hands. Ensuring that existing laws are enforced effectively and strengthening our background check system are also key in regulating the ownership and use of guns. Lastly, I believe that an increase in federal gun prosecutors and mandatory child safety locks on guns will help reduce gun violence and keep our communities safe. As we focus on preventing tragedies like the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting, I believe that an honest, open national conversation about strengthening gun control must take place.
