There continues to be a reactive stance on gun control that may not go away anytime soon. Legislators on all levels are fine tuning their approach on the matter. Our latest response is from North Carolina's Representative for the 9th Congressional District, Robert Pittenger. We have several more responses to put up for House members, but there are plenty of Senators for whom we have not heard from. If you do have any responses that you haven't seen here, send them our way at email@example.com.
Thank you for contacting me to express your thoughts regarding the national discussion about gun control reforms in the wake of the recent shootings in Newtown, Connecticut. I am glad to have the benefit of knowing your opinion.
The tragic loss at Sandy Hook Elementary School cannot be put into words. The actions of this evil man took the lives of the most vulnerable in our society. My heart and deepest sympathies continue to go out to the families who lost their loved ones.
Over the past several weeks, I have heard from many of my constituents who are still trying to understand the actions of a mad man and attempting to have an adult conversation about gun control. In ordering the Constitution of the United States, our Founding Fathers placed "the right to keep and bear arms" second in importance only to "the freedom of speech". With every right comes an equal responsibility. Careless exercise of these rights can be detrimental to society as a whole. The actions of an errant few who abuse their freedoms should not curtail those of the majority of law abiding Americans.
I believe the Second Amendment is foundational to our Republic. I am honored to hold an "A" rating from the National Rifle Association for my commitment to preserving the Second Amendment for future generations. As this vital issue moves through Congress, I promise to look at all facets of the matter, especially how pervasive violence has become in American culture. We can work together for a comprehensive, lasting, and true solution to the problem of gun violence in America, while also recognizing the mental health issues affecting our society.
Thank you again for contacting me. I am honored to serve as your United States Congressman, and I will continue to fight proudly for the people and the values of the Ninth District of North Carolina. If I can ever be of any assistance, please do not hesitate to call.
