Colt and FN Awarded Lightweight Machine Gun Contract

The M240L medium machine gun will be produced by the rifle manufacturing heavyweights of Colt Defense L.L.C, and FN Manufacturing for the U.S. Army to replace the the heavier M240B. PEO Soldier notes that more than a 5 Lb weight reduction is achieved through titanium construction and a different means for producing components. We provided the full award details below. The Army is continually pushing the edict of light is right and we are sure the soldiers agree.

Colt Defense, L.L.C., West Hartford, Conn. (W15QKN-12-D-0009), and FN Manufacturing, Columbia, S.C. (W15QKN-12-D-0008), were awarded a $77,400,000 firm-fixed-price contract between two contractors.  The award will provide for the procurement of 900 240L medium machine guns; first article test 10 weapons and first article test components.  Work will be performed in West Hartford, Conn., and Columbia, S.C., with an estimated completion date of Jan. 31, 2017.  Three bids were solicited, with three bids received.  The U.S. Army Contracting Command, Picatinny, N.J., is the contracting activity.
